âWhat are you doing here, Simms?â
âI thought Iâd see if I could tape a flyer in your window.â
Chief Kennedy had his hands in the file cabinet near the door to the police station. âThis is a police station not a mini-mart.â He slammed the drawer shut.
Officer Sutton looked up from the paperwork spread out on his desk.
Jerry waved his fingers at me. âTake your paper and go. You ought to know better.â
I did know better. But sticking a flyer up in his window wasnât the real reason Iâd come. âOkay, okay. Donât get your shorts in a bunch.â I pressed my palm against the door. âSay, while Iâm here . . .â I turned and followed Jerry to his desk near the back.
The police station still gave me the shivers. Iâd spent more time in this place than I liked recently, and not of my own volition. âWhatâs the word on the knife?â Chief Kennedyâs mouth hung open. âLift any prints? Test for blood yet?â
Jerry fell into his chair and crossed his legs and arms. âDo you have any idea how long these things take?â
âLong?â I said, with a half smile. A glare was his only response. âWhose knife was it anyway? It doesnât take long to lift a fingerprint.â
âThere were no prints on the knife, Simms.â He pointed to the door. âNow go.â
âYeah, just like the gun,â Officer Sutton put in.
Jerry sent his underling a look that clammed him up and got him moving paperwork again.
âNo prints, huh? Iâm not surprised,â I replied. âSomebody planted that knife.â
âIn an empty locker,â said Chief Kennedy. âHave you got an explanation for that?â
I admitted I didnât. âDonât you think you should be providing Miss Turner with security?â
âShe told me she didnât want any. Not that I have the manpower to provide it if she did.â
âI have a theory that our killer isnât going to stop until Miss Turner is dead.â I loomed over Jerry like a bad shadow. âI also have a few theories on who might want to see Ava Turner cross to the other side.â I arched my brow. âIf you get my drift.â
âIâve got my own theories, Simms.â
âLike who?â I scoffed. âMy cousin Rhonda? The killer hairdresser? Why would she want Ava Turner dead? Both she and Riley adore her.â
âNo, smarty-pants. Though she is on my list. And you can tell her I said so.â He leaned forward in his chair and his gut spilled over his belt. âI do believe Iâve narrowed down the suspects to a precious few.â
Now he had me interested. âSuch as?â
âSuch as you can read about it in the Weekender once I get them in custody.â Quick as a cat, Jerry sprang from his desk and marched me out of the police station by the elbow.

Iâd finally reconnected with Derek yesterday, and heâd agreed to take the two children to see Sammy the towhee. That was fine by me. There was no sense causing a deeper rift between me and his ex, Amy.
